FAQ
Why do you do this?
Why not? I have always loved Christmas and Christmas Lights. This was a way to make something unique and different. The real reason though is because it celebrates the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. It turns out to be a great way to share the season with others in our community and make people happy.
How many lights do you have?
We started out with around 7,000 lights and each year it has gone up. With the LED technology today, counting the lights is almost impossible!
How much power does it take? How much is your electric bill?
If everything was on, it would consume about 4,000 watts or 34 amps. I have installed 2 dedicated circuits to run everything. Most of the time only 30% of the display is on because it is animated, which helps conserve power. A lot of smaller displays in town actually use more power than ours because they are always "ON". Last year we used about $150 worthof electricity for the entire Christmas display season.
Do you have your own Radio Station? How are you tranmitting to my radio?
We us a small FM transmitter that broadcasts on 97.9FM. It only goes a short distance which allows people to listen to the music within sight of our display only.
How much time does it take?
Like any hobby, it takes quite a bit of time if you add it all up. I plan and work on things throughout the year but, things get really busy during November when I start spending all my weekends and evenings putting up lights. The whole family gets together to unpack, layout, and test strings of lights. We spend about 300 hours or so designing the display, making fixtures, and programing the computer for the display.
How do you control the lights?
Everything is controlled with software and hardware from Light-O-Rama. Currently our display has 64 indepentent channels running the lights. Soon, each individule light (LED) will be controlled separatly enabling us to change the color and sequence of the entire display.
How much did this cost?
Don't know and don't want to know.... ;)
How do you live in a house with that many lights?
Inside the house you can't even tell what is going on outside unless you look out the window. And because the music is being transmitted we don't hear it. (Unless you go out into the grarage where I have a set of speakers playing the show just so I can check up on it without going outside). My neighbors are my main concern! That is why I limit the hours the show runs to give them a break from the lights and traffic.
I have another question!
